OTTAWA — Canada’s national unemployment rate reached its lowest point in two years in July, falling to 6.4 per cent following an unexpected surge of 75,000 new jobs across the country. Economic analysts project this positive momentum in the labor market could extend into the coming months.
In Southern Alberta, the jobless rate saw a slight uptick to 5.6 per cent in July from 5.5 per cent in June. However, local economic development officials noted that current conditions mark a significant improvement from late last year, when unemployment exceeded 8 per cent. Job growth in high-paying sectors, particularly professional services, is expected to provide broader economic benefits to the region.
Despite the national gains, economic concerns persist over high youth unemployment—which in Alberta remains more than double the general rate—and the threat of upcoming trade tariffs scheduled to take effect later this month.
