OTTAWA — Despite ongoing political friction and trade disputes, a vast majority of Canadians continue to support sending first responders across the border to assist the United States during natural disasters.
According to a new Nanos Research poll commissioned by CTV News, four in five Canadians (80 per cent) support or somewhat support deploying emergency personnel to help their American neighbours when disaster strikes. Only 18 per cent expressed opposition.
Nik Nanos, Chief Data Scientist at Nanos Research, noted that while political rhetoric and tariff threats remain active, the core relationship between everyday Canadians and Americans transcends trade disputes. Cross-border aid between the two countries dates back decades, including formal agreements on shared wildfire suppression since 1982, assistance during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and historical acts of support like housing stranded flight passengers following the September 11 attacks.
