N.S.- The provincial government of Nova Scotia has decided to pull financial support for the Northstar Shelter in New Glasgow, following intense criticism from local residents and the town council. The government announced that funding will cease completely after a 90-day transition period.
The decision comes after the New Glasgow Town Council unanimously passed a motion last month demanding the shelter’s immediate closure, citing rising crime and safety concerns—including drug use, vandalism, and theft. Deputy Mayor Dawn Peters revealed that policing costs associated with shelter-related incidents had crossed $1 million, emphasizing that continuing operations in its current form posed a serious threat to the town’s safety and financial stability.
Originally established in 2018 as “Viola’s Place,” the facility expanded its services in 2022. As the shelter undergoes a phased closure, a specialized expert team has been appointed to ensure residents are transitioned into suitable alternative housing and support systems. The provincial government plans to shift away from traditional shelters, focusing instead on transitional and supportive housing options.
