BELLEVILLE, Ontario — Constable Jeff Smith, a veteran police officer who was severely injured during a gunfire exchange outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
The officer’s wife shared an emotional update on social media through a statement released by the Belleville Police Service, noting that her husband faces a “long and difficult road to recovery”. She expressed her deep gratitude to the public, colleagues, and community members for their overwhelming support and prayers during this challenging time.
Constable Smith was wounded while responding to and thwarting an attack outside the synagogue as worshippers gathered inside for Yom Kippur. The suspect—identified as a 29-year-old former Canadian Armed Forces soldier—was shot at the scene and later died from his injuries in hospital. Ontario’s independent police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
Belleville Deputy Police Chief Sheri Meeks praised Constable Smith, a 13-year veteran of the force and a long-standing member of the Emergency Response Unit, describing him as a trusted and highly dedicated officer. Canada’s Ministry of Defence and top officials have expressed grave concern over the incident and pledged full support to the injured constable’s family.
In the wake of the tragedy, an online fundraising campaign created for Constable Smith and his family has raised nearly $400,000 CAD. A separate fundraising initiative has also been established to support the restoration and repair of the damaged synagogue.
