Energy minister names 5 priority power-line projects for federal backing

YELLOWKNIFE: The Canadian federal government has announced it will prioritize critical infrastructure upgrades to allow provinces to share excess electricity more cheaply and easily. Wrapping up the Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference in Yellowknife, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson highlighted five key cross-border power-line projects, known as interties, that Ottawa is advancing in coordination with provinces and Yukon.

“We are supporting these projects because it is through transmission lines like these and a more connected electricity system writ large that we can improve reliability, we can lower costs, and we can support economic growth,” Hodgson stated during a news conference. While no new funding figures were explicitly attached, a draft news release confirmed that the federal government will “prioritize financial and regulatory support” to expedite these five initiatives.

The push to connect provincial grids comes as Ottawa aims for an ambitious target to double Canada’s total electricity grid capacity by 2050. This expansion is designed to keep pace with surging power demands driven by heavy industry, electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps, and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Currently, most Canadian provincial grids are heavily interconnected with the United States rather than with neighboring provinces—a structural dependency policy experts say must change to improve domestic energy security and lower household costs.

While clean energy experts from the David Suzuki Foundation welcomed the announcement as a positive first step, they also noted that the scale of the projects falls short of the tens of billions of dollars in national investments required to completely transform the grid.

The five priority power-line projects fast-tracked by the government include:

  • Alberta–British Columbia Intertie: Expected to boost cross-border electricity transmission capacity by approximately $150\text{ megawatts}$.
  • Alberta–Saskatchewan Intertie: Aimed at increasing electricity trade between the two provinces by $250\text{ megawatts}$ by upgrading the McNeill converter station near Medicine Hat, Alberta.
  • Saskatchewan–Manitoba Intertie Expansion: Intended to scale up transfer capabilities by up to $2\text{ gigawatts}$ along the vital Regina–Winnipeg corridor.
  • P.E.I.–New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion: Involves laying new subsea cables to connect Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick while strengthening overall links to Nova Scotia.
  • British Columbia–Yukon Grid Connect: A major $800\text{-kilometre}$, high-voltage transmission line built to tie Yukon’s isolated power grid into B.C.’s network, primarily supporting Yukon’s expanding critical minerals and industrial sectors.
