EDMONTON: After weeks of water-logged weather, communities across the Edmonton region and central Alberta are bracing for yet another severe rainstorm this weekend. Environment Canada issued a series of rainfall warnings on Friday morning, cautioning that an additional $40\text{ to }70\text{ mm}$ of rain is expected to drench the region.
The severe weather system has triggered official “orange alerts,” signifying high-severity storms capable of causing major, widespread disruptions and overland flooding. The rainfall warnings encompass the City of Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and St. Albert, stretching across a central Albertan corridor from Fox Creek and Edson over to Vermilion and Wainwright. Furthermore, northwestern parts of the province are under severe thunderstorm watches, with forecasts predicting powerful lightning, damaging winds, and large hail.
This June has already secured its place among the wettest on record for the capital region. Just last week, a massive deluge pushed municipal wastewater management systems to their absolute capacity, triggering flash floods and localized emergency alerts. As emergency crews responded to flooded basements, sewer backups, and washed-out roads, residents were urged to curb non-essential water consumption.
With this weekend’s incoming storm, Edmonton is on the verge of shattering a 112-year-old climate record. As of Monday, the city had already tracked just over $200\text{ mm}$ of rain for the month, matching the second-rainiest June set in 1965. The all-time record belongs to June 1914, when $216.5\text{ mm}$ of precipitation fell on the capital.
Extreme Heat Grips Northern Alberta
While central Alberta prepares for a historic soaking, the northern region of the province is experiencing the exact opposite extreme. A series of heat warnings remain in effect for northern communities, where a scorching weather pattern is expected to persist into early next week.
Daytime highs between 29°C and 31°C, paired with elevated overnight lows near 14°C, are forecast for the north. Public health officials are advising residents and visitors to take strict precautions against heat exhaustion and to ensure pets are shielded from the extreme exposure.
