According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), members of the Superior East Wawa detachment initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 near Chapleau after clocking a rental vehicle moving at an extreme speed. Officers registered the car travelling at 185 km/h in a designated 90 km/h speed zone. The high-speed interception occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. on June 23.
Charges and Immediate Penalties
As a direct result of the traffic stop and subsequent investigation, the young driver was formally charged with stunt driving under the provincial Highway Traffic Act.
Under Ontario’s strict roadside enforcement laws, the driver faced immediate, automatic penalties at the scene:
- Licence Suspension: The man received an immediate 30-day suspension of his driver’s licence.
- Vehicle Impoundment: The rental vehicle was seized on the spot and impounded for 14 days, regardless of its rental status.
