Three people injured, multiple homes evacuated after Markham house fire

MARKHAM — A major fire tore through a residential neighborhood in Markham on Friday morning, leaving three people injured, including two with serious conditions, and forcing the evacuation of multiple nearby homes.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene near Carleton and Kennedy roads at approximately 6:45 a.m. following reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames billowing from the first floor of the property.

According to Markham Fire Chief Chris Nearing, one victim managed to self-evacuate with the assistance of family members before first responders arrived. Fire crews successfully rescued two other occupants trapped inside the burning structure. All three victims were handed over to paramedics and rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities confirmed that two individuals sustained serious injuries, while the third person was treated for minor injuries. All other residents from the affected properties have been accounted for.

The intense blaze rapidly spread from the initial house to at least one neighboring home. As a precautionary measure, police evacuated several surrounding residences to ensure public safety.

York Regional Police stated that there is currently no indication that the fire is suspicious. Carlton Road remains closed on both sides of Chambery Crescent as emergency personnel clear the area. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate and determine the exact cause of the fire.
