Police Issue Alert as ‘Shopping Cart’ Thefts Surge in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD, BC – The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) has issued a public warning following a rise in thefts involving purses and wallets stolen directly from shopping carts. Authorities are urging shoppers to remain vigilant, as thieves are increasingly targeting individuals who leave their personal belongings unattended for even a few seconds while browsing store aisles.

According to police reports, at least three distinct incidents have been documented recently where victims lost their valuables in a matter of moments. In these cases, the suspects wait for the shopper to become distracted—such as when reaching for an item on a high shelf or comparing products—before snatching the wallet or purse left in the cart’s child seat or basket.

The impact of these thefts extends beyond the loss of physical cash. Police noted that in each reported instance, the suspects quickly moved to secondary locations to use stolen credit and debit cards for unauthorized withdrawals or high-value purchases. This rapid turnaround suggests that the thieves are organized and looking to exploit the gap between the theft and the victim realizing their cards are missing.

AbbyPD is advising the public to keep purses zipped and physically attached to their person, rather than placing them in the cart. Shoppers are also encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to store management or law enforcement immediately. Victims of such thefts are urged to contact the police and their financial institutions as soon as possible to prevent further fraudulent activity.
