EDMONTON – Wet weather will not halt progress on Edmonton’s major infrastructure projects this summer, meaning local motorists should prepare for a fresh wave of traffic disruptions starting this week. City officials have confirmed that most construction schedules remain on track despite ongoing rain, though drivers are continually encouraged to check the City of Edmonton website for real-time adjustments.
Commuters navigating major arterial routes will face significant bottlenecks beginning Monday. As part of the 95 Avenue Renewal project, a northbound lane on 170 Street approaching the 95 Avenue intersection will be locked down for approximately one month. To facilitate vital utility connections, additional lane closures may also be implemented overnight and during off-peak hours, further tightening traffic flow in the area.
Central and downtown areas will also experience immediate closures. Judy Padua Way will shut down completely from Monday through Wednesday, though access to the local parkade remains active, and drivers can still utilize the 99 Street access point from Jasper Avenue. Meanwhile, the historic Dawson Bridge will be fully closed to all vehicular traffic over the weekend to allow crews to replace bridge barriers, transitioning to a single shared lane during weekdays starting Monday. This rolling pattern will repeat every weekend until June 29. Furthermore, ongoing construction for the Valley Line West LRT will reduce sections of Stony Plain Road between 124 Street and 138 Street to a single shared lane during off-peak windows until the fall.
Later in the week, neighborhood renewals and major transit extensions will trigger deeper gridlock. Weather permitting, 132 Avenue will close entirely from 90 Street to Delwood Road on Thursday, remaining blocked until the end of August, though the 82 Street intersection will stay open for north-south traffic. Additionally, starting Wednesday, access points to the Kiss and Ride entrance on Heritage Valley Trail will undergo periodic, alternating closures until the end of 2026 to accommodate work on the Capital Line South LRT extension.
The most severe localized disruptions are slated for the Southgate area starting Wednesday night. Round-the-clock track rehabilitation work at the intersection of 51 Avenue and 111 Street will reduce 111 Street to a single lane in both directions and ban all left turns until June 29. Compounding the issue, westbound 51 Avenue will be entirely closed between 110 Street and 111 Street, completely cutting off standard access to and from Southgate Mall during this period. City planners are strongly advising drivers to bypass the area entirely by using Whitemud Drive or 61 Avenue as alternatives.
