LISBAN- Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a monumental 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed the historic decision through an emotional video message shared across his social media channels, stating that he would officially “hand back the number 7 shirt” following the upcoming November international break.
An Unmatched International Legacy
Making his senior international debut for Portugal back in August 2003 against Kazakhstan, Ronaldo went on to redefine the record books of global football. He departs the international stage as men’s football’s all-time leading appearance maker and record goalscorer, having amassed an incredible 146 goals in 234 appearances.
His tenure with A Seleção was defined by historic triumphs, most notably captaining Portugal to glory at UEFA Euro 2016 to capture the nation’s first-ever major international trophy, followed by leading them to victory in the UEFA Nations League.
A Heartfelt Farewell
Reflecting on his journey, Ronaldo admitted that stepping away from the jersey he wore with distinction for over two decades was an emotional burden.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team. I never felt it belonged to me alone… It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” Ronaldo shared in his video address. “If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it.”
While his legendary chapter with the national team has drawn to a close, Ronaldo will continue playing at the club level, remaining active with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
