OTTAWA- Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite the medical diagnosis, the mayor confirmed that he will remain in office, though he plans to scale back his participation in public events over the coming months.
The discovery was made following an MRI scan prompted by severe headaches and vision issues he had experienced over the past few months. Medical tests revealed a type of brain tumor known as a “meningioma”. Boyer shared on social media that while the majority of such tumors are benign, he is currently awaiting an upcoming consultation with a neurosurgeon to determine the appropriate treatment plan.
Addressing his constituents, Boyer reassured the public regarding his current health, stating that he feels fully energetic, has no immediate health complications, and remains committed to guiding the city’s development goals. He confirmed that essential mayoral responsibilities and official meetings will continue without interruption.
Stéphane Boyer first assumed office as the Mayor of Laval in 2021 at the age of 33, making history as the youngest mayor in the city’s history. He secured a decisive second term after winning a major victory with 59 percent of the vote. Additionally, Boyer has been managing ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the spine, for several years.
