Wakeham Holds First Talks with Quebec Premier-Designate on Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Project

St. John’s: Talks have officially commenced between Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador regarding the agreement surrounding the Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Project. Quebec Premier-Designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham spoke via telephone on Wednesday.

This marks the first interaction between the two leaders following the Quebec provincial election. The primary focus of the discussion was the critical cooperation and implementation agreement concerning both the Churchill Falls and Gull Island projects.

Premier Wakeham’s office stated that proposed modifications to the existing power marketing agreement for the Churchill Falls hydroelectric plant, along with new energy development projects, were key elements of the conversation.

Wakeham’s office further noted that the new Premier, Plamondon, requires time to fully understand the complexities of the issues, expressing confidence in establishing a strong working relationship with him.

Wakeham mentioned that following the Quebec election results, there has been no indication that the projects will be canceled or that major alterations will be made to the agreement. He emphasized that the agreement itself provides clear guidance and that he remains fully confident regarding the matter.

Wakeham disclosed details of the phone call while addressing the Mount Pearl-Paradise Chamber of Commerce meeting. He added that he was previously unable to speak with Plamondon due to travel complications while returning to St. John’s after completing various events and government announcements in Western Labrador.
