Halifax Harbour turns into racecourse: Thousands flock to see SailGP

Thousands of spectators gathered along the Halifax Harbour this weekend to witness a thrilling, high-stakes installment of SailGP, which culminated in a spectacular neck-and-neck finish on Sunday. Described by organizers as “Grand Prix racing on water,” the global championship features high-tech, super-fast, foiling catamarans racing at extreme speeds on short-course stadium tracks designed specifically for shoreline fans. Having previously hosted successful events in international hubs like Rio de Janeiro, Bermuda, and New York, Halifax is rapidly establishing its own legacy on the global racing calendar after a highly successful Canadian debut in 2024 and an equally explosive encore this year.

The event solidified Halifax’s reputation as a fan-favorite destination, drawing a massive, enthusiastic crowd that remained unfazed even when organizers proactively adjusted Sunday’s race schedule to align with local weather forecasts. Spectators from across Canada and the United States praised the unique, fast-paced environment, noting the incredible sight of watching the massive vessels seamlessly lift and foil above the water’s surface. According to economic projections released by SailGP, the high-profile weekend is estimated to have generated approximately $60 million in economic impact for the Halifax region.

On the water, the signature F50 catamarans kept fans on their feet as they reached blistering speeds of around 75 kilometers per hour while navigating sharp, tactical turns in the harbor. Despite a fierce performance that gave the hometown crowd plenty to cheer for on Sunday, Canada’s NorthStar SailGP team ultimately finished 7th out of the 13 competing nations.

The weekend wrapped up with a dramatic structural shift, transitioning to a four-boat, winner-takes-all final format for the very first time. The new setup delivered a down-to-the-wire finish, with Team Spain ultimately edging out the competition to claim first place. Following the massive success of this year’s turnout and the undeniable energy of the local crowd, organizers confirmed that SailGP is already locked in to return to Halifax for a third consecutive year next season.
