Barrie ready for busy tourism season

BARRIE: The City of Barrie is experiencing an unprecedented surge in tourism well ahead of the official start of the summer season. Local officials confirmed that an influx of visitors has taken over the city since early June, heavily driven by back-to-back marquee events, including the season kickoff of the ‘Troubadour Summer Concert Series’ and the highly anticipated ‘Barrie Air Show.’

The city is actively looking to build upon last year’s record-breaking tourism milestone. In 2025, Barrie welcomed over 670,000 overnight visitors, generating a massive $212 million injection into the local economy. With the recent launch of three brand-new hotels this year, industry experts project even greater financial growth across the regional tourism sector.

Adding to the momentum, Canada’s role as a host nation for the ongoing global soccer tournament has provided a historic boost to the regional hospitality sector. Vanessa Stevenson, General Manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton, reported that local hotels have been completely sold out since the beginning of June.

In addition to crowds attending downtown events like the Troubadour Festival and the waterfront Air Show, Barrie has become the primary lodging hub for travelers heading to neighboring regional events, such as the Butter Tart Festival in Midland and the Georgian Bay Festival. A heavy influx of guests arriving for weddings and family reunions has further heightened local demand, with hotel occupancy rates safely projected to finish well above 85% for the month.

Craig Stevens, Executive Director of the Downtown Barrie BIA, noted that the city’s core saw dense crowds over the past two consecutive weekends. While celebrating the economic boost, Stevens reminded residents and visitors alike of the critical importance of keeping this revenue local. He emphasized that the downtown shops, restaurants, and independent businesses are owned and operated by friends and family members within the immediate neighborhood, making community-driven support essential.

For those who missed the early June events, Barrie’s summer calendar remains packed with major attractions. The downtown core is already gearing up for its extensive Canada Day celebrations. Furthermore, the second phase of the Troubadour Summer Concert Series is scheduled to return on July 25, featuring a highly anticipated headlining performance by the iconic Canadian rock band, ‘The Watchmen.’
