Alberta Grapples with Measles Outbreak; Health Officials Urge Government Action

Edmonton: Health officials are pressing the Alberta government to take more robust measures as measles continues to spread across the province. As of Tuesday, 1,472 cases have been reported.

Dr. James Talbot, Alberta’s former Chief Medical Officer of Health, emphasized the urgency of vaccinating children against measles to ensure immunity before the next school year begins, given the ongoing spread. Talbot noted a significant increase in cases in Calgary and the northern regions of the province.

The majority of those affected in Alberta are children and teenagers. Although measles was declared eliminated in Canada in 1998, a decline in vaccination rates has led to a surge in cases in recent months.
