TORONTO: In preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Rogers Communications has announced a $22 million upgrade to its 5G+ network to provide seamless connectivity for the influx of football fans. The massive infrastructure project targets key hubs including BMO Field, Pearson International Airport, and Union Station. The company dedicated approximately 40,000 man-hours to install the necessary equipment across the city to ensure the network can handle peak traffic.
The upgrades are particularly significant at BMO Field, where the network’s capacity has been bolstered to the equivalent of 16 new cell towers. By expanding the available spectrum, Rogers aims to maintain high-speed internet even when tens of thousands of spectators are connected simultaneously. Additionally, the company has deployed mobile cell towers in high-traffic areas throughout Toronto to guarantee consistent coverage during the festivities.
As Toronto prepares to host six matches during the 2026 World Cup—co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico—these technological improvements are expected to leave a lasting legacy. Rogers noted that the enhanced 5G services will remain a permanent fixture for Toronto residents long after the tournament concludes. Similar network investments are also underway in Vancouver to support the tournament’s western Canadian venues.
