Ontario raising speed limits on more highways

KING CITY, Ont. — Driving across Ontario is about to get faster. In a major announcement on Tuesday morning, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria revealed that the provincial government is legally raising the speed limit from 100 km/h to 110 km/h across an additional 938 kilometres of Ontario’s highway network. The decision follows a series of previous expansions and extensive data monitoring on the province’s busiest arterial roads.

The newly adjusted speed limits will be rolled out in a phased manner, beginning as early as this week. The initial changes are set to take effect on some major eastern sections of Highways 401 and 416 this coming Friday. Following the initial launch, the remaining targeted stretches across Highway 401, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), and Highways 402, 403, 416, and 417 will see the higher limits implemented incrementally by the end of September.

According to government estimates, the higher speed limits will yield noticeable reductions in travel times for long-distance commuters. For instance, drivers traveling from Sarnia to Toronto could shave nearly 20 minutes off their journey, while a road trip from Toronto to Ottawa could be cut short by almost half an hour. Furthermore, Minister Sarkaria noted that critical infrastructure currently in development—such as the Bradford Bypass and Highway 413—is being actively engineered and built with a baseline speed limit of 110 km/h in mind.

The announcement marks a broad expansion of a policy trajectory set in motion by Premier Doug Ford. The Ford administration previously increased limits across hundreds of kilometres of select highways during the summers of 2022 and 2024. Following those implementations, the Ministry of Transportation conducted rigorous safety assessments, concluding that increasing the limits on these specific structural corridors allows drivers to reach their destinations faster without compromising road safety.
