OTTAWA: Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to announce Canada’s long-awaited Clean Electricity Strategy today, marking a definitive shift toward a green energy future. The federal government aims to double the nation’s power grid capacity by 2050 to meet the surging energy demands of a modern economy. This official rollout follows signals from the Prime Minister earlier in March regarding the urgency of a comprehensive national energy policy.
The demand for electricity in Canada has reached an inflection point, driven primarily by the rapid proliferation of electric vehicles, the expansion of high-capacity data centers, and a revitalized defense manufacturing sector. Recognizing these pressures, the government previously indicated in its April 28 economic review that it would release a discussion paper to consult provinces and territories on the essential modernization of the national power infrastructure.
A significant focus of the new policy is addressing energy disparities in remote regions, such as Nunavut, which currently remain heavily reliant on diesel generators. To bridge this gap and reduce carbon emissions, the federal government has committed to expanding nuclear power production. This includes a strategic partnership with the province of Alberta to integrate nuclear energy into the grid by 2050, ensuring a stable and sustainable power supply for the entire country.
