High Operating Costs Force Canada to Shut Down Decades-Old ‘Weatheradio’ Service

OTTAWA – Environment Canada has announced the decommissioning of its iconic Weatheradio service, a move that ends decades of real-time weather forecasting and emergency broadcasting across the country. The agency cited soaring operational and maintenance costs as the primary reason for the shutdown.

The radio transmitters are scheduled to go offline starting this Monday. Authorities have directed citizens to transition to the WeatherCAN mobile application or the official government website for future weather updates and alerts.

A Legacy Ends

Launched in the 1970s, Weatheradio was a cornerstone of Canadian public safety, reaching over 90% of the population. While the service was a lifeline for generations, Environment Canada stated that maintaining an analog radio network has become increasingly difficult and inefficient in an era dominated by high-speed internet and digital platforms.
