Hand-counting ballots could delay Calgary election results

CALGARY: Authorities have indicated that the vote count in the Calgary municipal election may be delayed. Officials stated that the Alberta government’s ban on the use of electronic voting machines is likely to cause the delay. It may take up to two days to know the full results of the election, which is scheduled for October 20. In the previous 2021 election, the results were announced by 9:30 PM. However, Elections Calgary has clarified that the results will be delayed this time as the votes must be counted by hand.

Meanwhile, authorities say the change could cost taxpayers an additional $3.3 million. This amount will need to be spent on more polling stations, staff, and materials. The government explains that the ban on electronic voting machines was made to increase credibility. Advance voting will be available from October 6 to 11.
