Canada to Hold Federal Election on April 28

OTTAWA: Canada’s next federal election will take place on Monday, April 28, according to reports. Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet with Governor General Mary Simon on Sunday to formally initiate the election process. During the meeting, Carney is expected to request the dissolution of Parliament, triggering the official campaign period.

As per Elections Canada regulations, a federal election campaign must last a minimum of 37 days, including both the day of the election call and Election Day itself. With the anticipated announcement on Sunday, early voting is likely to coincide with the Easter weekend. Notably, Carney has opted for the shortest campaign period permitted under Canadian law — a strategy last employed in the 2021 federal election.

The upcoming election will also occur against a backdrop of political change. Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on January 6, Carney assumed leadership of the Liberal Party. By initiating the election before Parliament’s scheduled return on Monday, Carney is expected to sidestep a potential no-confidence motion from the Conservative Party, the official opposition.

It is also noteworthy that Carney is not currently a sitting Member of Parliament, making the upcoming election a significant test of his leadership and public support.
