Truck driver, company face 17 charges after same major defects found: OPP

BARRIE- An Ontario truck driver and their operating company are facing a combined total of 17 charges after a commercial transport truck, previously sidelined for major safety violations, was caught back on the road without any of the defects being fixed.

According to the Caledon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Mobilization Unit, an officer intercepted the transport truck on King Street on Monday. Investigators revealed that the Ministry of Transportation safety inspectors had officially ordered the vehicle out of service just last week following the discovery of multiple mechanical and safety hazards.

Upon conducting a fresh inspection, officers discovered that the operator had made absolutely no effort to repair the original issues. Instead, the vehicle had bypassed the restriction through highly questionable means.

“Somehow, this operator received new plates and the vehicle had been certified to be back on the road,” the OPP stated in a social media post detailing the incident.

Recognizing the ongoing risk to public safety, officers immediately seized the newly issued license plates and once again removed both the truck and its trailer from service.

The OPP used the incident to remind commercial operators of their legal obligations, emphasizing that compliance is non-negotiable.

“Safety standards are not suggestions; they’re the law,” the OPP said. “The good news, no new defects. The bad news, none of the original defects were fixed.”
