Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair festival cancelled as police investigate fatal shooting

TORONTO- The final day of Toronto’s popular Salsa on St. Clair street festival has been officially cancelled following a deadly shooting that killed two men and seriously injured six others late Saturday night. Toronto City Councillor Josh Matlow announced on Sunday morning that the festival would not resume as police continue their complex investigation at the scene.

The violence erupted around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday along St. Clair Avenue West. According to Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, the incident involved a targeted exchange of gunfire between two individuals in the middle of the crowded festival. The sudden gunshots triggered massive panic among the tens of thousands of attendees who had gathered to enjoy the Latin American music, dance, and food, causing crowds to flee frantically for safety. Several people sustained injuries in the resulting stampede. Police recovered two firearms at the scene.

Festival organizers expressed deep shock and sadness over the senseless violence, offering their condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford both strongly condemned the shooting. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the act of violence incredibly reckless and cruel, highlighting that the cultural festival is a space where families, children, and seniors regularly gather. A massive police hunt for the suspects remains underway.
