TORONTO: Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto and its surrounding regions as a severe heatwave grips the area. Officials warned that high humidity levels could make temperatures feel like 35°C today, with the sweltering conditions expected to persist until Tuesday night. A yellow alert has been put in place across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA)—including Mississauga, Brampton, and Hamilton—stretching as far west as Windsor. Relief is on the horizon, however, as a cooler weather front is expected to arrive by Wednesday, dropping temperatures down to a much more comfortable 16°C.
In response to the dangerous spike in temperatures, the City of Toronto has activated its comprehensive emergency Heat Relief Strategy to help residents cope with the stifling conditions. To ensure public safety, the city has opened more than 380 outdoor water fountains and 247 public washrooms across various municipal parks. Furthermore, municipal authorities announced that mobile water trailers will be deployed by this afternoon at key civic hubs, including Nathan Phillips Square, Mel Lastman Square, the East York Civic Centre, and the Etobicoke Civic Centre.
Meanwhile, health experts are urging the public to take proactive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses during this period. Residents are being strongly advised to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated throughout the day, even if they do not explicitly feel thirsty. Vulnerable populations, including seniors, young children, and outdoor workers, are also being reminded to limit strenuous outdoor activities and seek out air-conditioned spaces whenever possible until the heatwave subsides.
