CALGARY — Calgary police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect involved in a “grandparent scam” that defrauded a local senior out of nearly $5,000.
The incident began on March 23, when an unknown man contacted a woman living in the 100-200 block of Tuscany Ridge Close N.W. The caller claimed to be her grandson, stating that he was currently in an Edmonton jail and desperately needed money for bail.
Believing her family member was in trouble, the victim withdrew $4,900 from her bank account. She then contacted the fraudster using a phone number provided during the initial conversation.
According to investigators, the suspect subsequently arrived at the victim’s residence. He identified himself as an Edmonton Police Service detective before taking the money and fleeing the scene.
Suspect Description
Police have released the following description of the suspect:
- Age: 30 to 40 years old
- Height: 178 centimeters (5’10”)
- Appearance: Black hair and a beard
