Quarterly payments of Ottawa’s boosted grocery and essentials benefit start today

OTTAWA: Lower-income Canadians will see a timely financial boost in their bank accounts starting today as the federal government begins rolling out the newly enhanced quarterly payments for its core affordability program.

The initiative, officially called the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, is designed to provide targeted financial relief every three months to lower-income households. The program was previously known nationwide as the GST/HST credit. Eligible recipients have already received a significant portion of this year’s assistance, following a one-time lump-sum payment delivered in early June that was worth 50 per cent of the benefit’s total annual value.

Going forward, the regular quarterly deposits will reflect a substantial 25 per cent boost, an enhancement that the federal government has committed to maintaining for the next five years. The total annual amount distributed varies by household, ranging from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand dollars per family. Individual amounts are calculated based on specific criteria, including marital status and the number of dependent children in the home.

The revamped affordability measure was originally pitched in January by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The administration introduced the beefed-up benefit package as a direct countermeasure to shield Canadians from ongoing macroeconomic volatility and the persistently rising costs of daily essential goods.
