NEW DELHI — After weeks of intense commercial deadlock and growing anxiety among sports enthusiasts, Indian football fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially set to be broadcast live across India, effectively avoiding a highly feared television blackout. Shaji Prabhakaran, the former General Secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), revealed that negotiations for the Indian media rights have successfully concluded, with an official announcement regarding the broadcast partner anticipated early next week.
According to multiple industry reports, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has emerged as the frontrunner to secure the broadcasting rights, marking its ambitious re-entry into the sports television market. As part of this major expansion, Zee is reportedly planning to launch a bouquet of seven new sports channels under the trademarked brand “United 8 Sports.” Recent trademark applications indicate that the network intends to roll out both standard and high-definition (HD) channels to cater to a diverse, pan-India audience.
Insiders reveal that the finalized deal with world football’s governing body, FIFA, is valued at approximately $30 million to $35 million (around ₹250–₹290 crore). This agreement is expected to cover the broadcast rights for both the 2026 and 2030 Men’s FIFA World Cups. The breakthrough brings immense relief to fans, especially after state broadcaster Doordarshan and other major networks failed to secure the rights due to initial valuation disagreements.
The road to this agreement was particularly challenging due to the tournament’s awkward broadcasting schedule. With the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a vast majority of the 104 matches will kick off late at night or during the early morning hours in India. Despite these timing hurdles, the impending deal ensures that Indian fans will not miss a single moment of the world’s greatest sporting spectacle when it kicks off on June 11, 2026.
