Heavy Rain and Dense Fog Trigger Weather Alerts Across the GTA

Environment Canada has issued a series of weather warnings for the Greater Toronto Area, alerting residents to a combination of heavy rainfall and dangerously thick fog. Forecasters anticipate an additional 20 mm of rain through Thursday, with a lingering possibility of thunderstorms. The weather agency noted that visibility is expected to drop below 200 meters in many sectors, creating “near-zero visibility” conditions that could severely impact the daily commute.

In response to the hazardous conditions, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has urged motorists to adapt their driving habits. Drivers are advised to slow down significantly, avoid sudden maneuvers, and use low-beam headlights, as high beams often reflect off the fog and further obscure the view. Authorities highlighted that because the ground is already saturated from consecutive days of rain, the risk of water pooling on highways and flooding in low-lying residential areas is particularly high.

The hydrological impact has prompted the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to issue official Flood Watches. These advisories cover Toronto, Halton, Peel, and Oshawa, warning that rivers and streams are reaching peak capacity. The public is being told to stay well back from all waterways, as banks may become unstable and water temperatures remains dangerously cold.

The severity of the system is already being felt in the town of Minden, where local officials have declared a State of Emergency due to significant flooding. While the most intense rainfall is expected to subside by Thursday evening, meteorologists stress that the danger has not passed. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and maintain emergency preparations through Friday, as water levels in the region’s watersheds may continue to rise even after the rain stops.
