HAMILTON- Garner Road in West Hamilton, Canada, will be completely closed to through traffic for nearly two months starting Monday as the city undertakes major sewer line repairs. Municipal officials stated that this urgent measure became necessary as the repairs can no longer be completed without digging up the road.
The closure, which begins July 13, will affect the section of Garner Road between Southcote Road and Glancaster Road. No vehicles will be permitted to pass between Springbrook Avenue and 850 Garner Road East. The city expects the road to reopen by September 4, weather permitting.
The closure is required because crews must excavate about nine meters below the road to repair a section of the underground sewer pipe that sank after unstable ground conditions were discovered near the end of a previous project in 2025. Initially, the city tried to complete the repair using a tunneling method to keep the road open. However, after further engineering reviews determined that approach was unsafe, open-cut construction (digging up the roadway) was deemed necessary.
These long-standing construction works have significantly impacted local businesses and restaurants in the area. While businesses along Garner Road will remain open during construction, detour routes have been set up for commuters via Southcote Road, Book Road, and Glancaster Road. Additionally, Hamilton Street Railway buses will detour around the closure. Emergency vehicle access and regular garbage collection will continue without disruption.
This is one of several major road projects taking place in Hamilton this summer. In addition to this, resurfacing and road restoration work will begin Monday on Barton Street East between Victoria Avenue North and Kenilworth Avenue North, lasting through late October. Lane closures on Olympic Drive will also continue until the end of August. Authorities have urged motorists to reduce their speed and drive with caution through construction zones.
