Gas prices to dip in time for weekend

BARRIE — Drivers across the region may find a reason to smile this weekend as a significant dip in fuel costs offers a brief respite from the record-high prices that have plagued the pumps for months. While long-term forecasts suggest that high energy costs are here to stay, analysts are pointing toward a substantial short-term drop that could save commuters a considerable amount of money if they timing their fill-ups correctly.

According to Dan McTeague, President of Canadians for Affordable Energy, gas prices are projected to plummet by more than 10 cents per litre this Friday. This anticipated slide follows a five-cent drop already recorded on Thursday, marking a sharp downward trend after weeks of relentless increases. Experts are advising motorists who are running low to hold off on visiting the gas station until Friday morning to take full advantage of the double-digit savings.

The impact of this shift is particularly visible in Barrie, where prices recently flirted with the $2-per-litre mark. As of Thursday, the average price at the pump sat at approximately 190 cents per litre. If McTeague’s predictions hold true, drivers can expect to see prices hovering around 183 cents per litre by Friday afternoon, providing the most significant price break the area has seen in recent weeks.

Despite this welcome news, the broader economic outlook remains cautious. Industry experts warn that the underlying factors driving high energy costs—including global supply constraints and geopolitical instability—have not disappeared. While the relief heading into the weekend is a “slight” win for consumers, the general consensus remains that fuel prices will likely remain elevated and volatile for several months to come.
