CALGARY — The Canadian federal government has announced a massive $40 million investment to help Contemporary Calgary complete its transformation into a premier destination for contemporary art and education. The funding will secure the final phases of reviving the city’s historic Centennial Planetarium into a modern cultural hub.
Calgary Liberal MP Corey Hogan stated that this “life-changing money” will allow residents to engage with the arts in fully modernized facilities, heavily supporting an ecosystem vital to the city’s overall vibrancy. Once fully completed, the facility will boast over 39,000 square feet of gallery and educational space. A major highlight of the project is the installation of Canada’s first flat-floor LED dome dedicated entirely to contemporary art installations, a feature expected to draw global visitors to the city.
David Leinster, CEO of Contemporary Calgary, expressed gratitude to the federal government for its partnership in upgrading and preserving one of the city’s most iconic heritage buildings. Built initially as a collaborative project to mark Canada’s Centennial, Leinster noted that this investment ensures the legacy of the civic gathering place continues for generations. He highlighted the initiative as a model of how heritage preservation, adaptive reuse, and environmental leadership can align to build stronger communities.
