TORONTO – Despite the arrival of May, Toronto is experiencing a lingering winter-like chill. Weather forecasters have issued warnings as temperatures are expected to drop toward the freezing mark overnight in the coming days, prompting caution for residents across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
On Friday morning, the city recorded a low of 2.9°C, but the real concern lies in the outskirts of the city and rural areas where the risk of frost and even light flurries remains high. Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for the GTA, noting that clear skies and light winds tonight and tomorrow night will allow heat to escape rapidly, potentially damaging sensitive plants and early-season crops.
While Saturday’s daytime high is expected to reach around 9°C, the mercury is predicted to dip back to 0°C overnight. Residents are encouraged to cover vulnerable outdoor greenery or bring potted plants indoors to protect them from the biting cold. Typically, Toronto sees average May temperatures of around 16°C during the day and 7°C at night, making this current cold snap significantly below seasonal norms.
However, a reprieve is on the horizon. Meteorologists predict a shift starting Sunday, with more sunshine and temperatures climbing to 12°C. The warmup is expected to gain momentum early next week, with Monday and Tuesday seeing highs of 17°C, finally bringing the more comfortable spring weather residents have been waiting for.
