Alberta- The Alberta government has announced another major expansion of its school infrastructure projects through the “Schools Now” program. Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides and Infrastructure Minister Martin Long detailed the upcoming projects during a press conference at Calgary’s McDougall Centre on Thursday morning.
The ministers were joined by Calgary Board of Education chair Laura Hack and Calgary Catholic School District chair Lory Iovinelli for the announcement. The “Schools Now” initiative is specifically designed to accelerate the delivery of brand-new schools, replace aging facilities, and execute major modernizations across the province.
Surging Population Puts Strain on Local Schools The provincial boost comes at a critical time as Alberta continues to grapple with historic and rapid population growth, which has placed immense pressure on local school boards.
Calgary has emerged as one of the hardest-hit communities in the province, with a vast majority of its public and Catholic schools currently operating near or well above their intended student capacity. In many fast-growing suburban neighborhoods, students have been forced to learn in temporary modular classrooms for years while awaiting the construction of permanent school buildings.
This latest round of funding and project approvals is part of a broader, multi-year provincial master plan aimed at aggressively expanding Alberta’s educational spaces to keep pace with the ongoing migration boom.
