Stella’s Brand Black Pepper Sauce Recalled in Canada

OTTAWA: A recall has been issued for Stella’s Authentic brand Shito, a Ghanaian black pepper sauce, due to commercial sterility concerns, which can lead to contamination. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is overseeing the recall, which applies to products sold in Ontario.

The recall affects two sizes of the product:

  • 500 ml containers with UPC 7 52349 96515 0
  • 250 ml containers with UPC 7 52349 96516 7

For both sizes, the recall applies to products with Batch Number STE-019 and a Best Before date of either Dec. 31, 2025, or Apr. 30, 2026.

According to the CFIA, a lack of commercial sterility could allow for the growth of harmful bacteria, such as Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious foodborne illness. Although there have been no reported illnesses linked to the product, consumers are advised not to consume, sell, or distribute the affected sauce. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase.

The recalling firm is Stella Services. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of additional products.
