EDMONTON, AB – The Alberta government has announced a new initiative to use solar power in its correctional centers. The plan involves installing solar panels at five of the province’s ten facilities, a move that is expected to save up to one million dollars annually.
According to Michael Kwass, press secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure, the solar panels are projected to generate 80 percent of the energy consumed at the designated sites.
The initial phase of the project will see solar panels installed at correctional centers in Edmonton and Calgary. While the use of solar energy in jails is common in the United States, this initiative marks the first time such a program will be implemented in a Canadian prison.
