N.L. tourists, government scrambling as Air Canada strike looms

St. John’s: Air Canada’s decision to gradually suspend flight services could also affect the tourism sector in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to reports. The airline announced it would halt services starting Saturday following a strike by flight attendants. In a joint statement, the Government of Newfoundland and Hospitality NL expressed concerns that a strike during the summer season would adversely impact their tourism industry.

“The province’s small businesses and tourism operators cannot afford a reduction in services. While we fully respect the collective bargaining process, we cannot stand by and watch a strike cause further financial hardship for our people and our industries,” the provincial government said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Air Canada has announced that if flights are canceled, it will attempt to transport passengers to their destinations with the help of other airlines. This decision is expected to affect 130,000 passengers daily. The company stated that passengers who booked tickets on or before August 13 for travel between August 15 and 18 can either change their flight for free or cancel their ticket for a full refund.
