Premiers, prime minister to meet ahead of U.S.-Canada trade deadline

OTTAWA: Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers are convening today in Muskoka, central Ontario, for a three-day meeting set against the backdrop of intensifying trade discussions with the United States. Led by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, the provincial and territorial leaders will begin their gathering around midday Monday.

With Canada’s closest ally and largest trading partner embroiled in an ongoing trade dispute, the premiers’ primary discussions are expected to focus on safeguarding the domestic economy, advancing nation-building projects, and boosting internal trade by breaking down existing barriers.

On Tuesday, the second day of the meeting, Prime Minister Mark Carney will join the premiers. He is scheduled to directly brief all 13 leaders on the status of the trade discussions and the looming threat of increased tariffs from the U.S. administration.

Beyond the uncertainties of trade, the premiers’ agenda is comprehensive. They are anticipated to deliberate on critical issues such as energy security, public safety concerns including bail reform, emergency management in light of the ongoing wildfire season across provinces, immigration, and healthcare. The premiers will also meet with leaders of national Indigenous organizations.

The discussions are scheduled to conclude on Wednesday afternoon with a closing press conference.
