New Zealand actor Sam Neill, known for Jurassic Park role, dead at 78

Renowned Hollywood actor Sir Sam Neill, who became a global favorite among movie lovers through his iconic role in the ‘Jurassic Park’ films, has passed away at the age of 78. He breathed his last at a hospital in Sydney. In an official statement, his family shared that his passing was sudden and unexpected, occurring due to health complications while he was otherwise in remission and maintaining good health. The family expressed that their only comfort is knowing he passed away while remaining cancer-free.

In 2023, Sam Neill himself revealed in his memoir that he had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (a type of blood cancer). Following the diagnosis, he underwent a year of intense treatments and chemotherapy. This past April, he happily shared with his fans that he had successfully beaten the cancer and achieved full remission through a new experimental treatment.

Sam Neill’s career took a historic turn when director Steven Spielberg cast him in ‘Jurassic Park’ instead of Harrison Ford. His portrayal of the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant brought him global recognition. He went on to reprise this legendary role in ‘Jurassic Park III’ and ‘Jurassic World Dominion’. His other notable films include the Oscar-winning ‘The Piano’ and ‘The Hunt for Red October’. The film ‘The Last Resort’, directed by Donald Petrie, marks his final on-screen appearance.

Beyond cinema, Sam Neill was a prominent and powerful presence on television as well. His antagonist role as Major Chester Campbell in the blockbuster web series ‘Peaky Blinders’ is widely considered one of the finest performances of his career. In an acting career spanning over five decades, he earned three Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations. Dignitaries and prominent figures worldwide, including the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand, have expressed their deep condolences on his passing.
