MONTREAL – Police are investigating a significant theft at Montreal’s Sacre Coeur Hospital after approximately $40,000 worth of specialized medical equipment was stolen from the facility. The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) confirmed that the incident took place earlier this spring and remains an active, ongoing investigation.
According to Montreal police spokesperson Johany Charland, the crime came to light when a woman arrived at a local police station around 9:45 a.m. on May 2 to formally report the theft, which had occurred just hours prior. The complainant stated that an unidentified male suspect managed to infiltrate a semi-restricted area within the hospital complex. Once inside, the intruder gathered and fled with several high-value medical items before authorities could be notified.
Law enforcement officials have noted that the suspect was spotted leaving the immediate scene of the crime. Investigators have since secured surveillance camera footage from the hospital infrastructure and conducted interviews with eyewitnesses who were present in the vicinity at the time of the breach. At this stage, police have not disclosed the exact nature of the relationship between the reporting woman and the hospital or the stolen assets.
No arrests have been made as the SPVM continues to analyze the gathered evidence to identify the suspect. Meanwhile, the regional health authority overseeing the facility, Santé Québec Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal – Universitaire, declined to elaborate on the security breach or specify the exact types of equipment taken, stating in an email that it cannot issue public comments while the police investigation is actively underway.
