Funeral to be held for OPP officer fatally struck by car in Hearst, Ont., last week

MISSISSAUGA — Law enforcement officers, dignitaries, and grieving family members gathered today in Mississauga to pay their final respects to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in the line of duty last week.

The 29-year-old officer was fatally struck by a vehicle in the northern Ontario town of Hearst on June 9, while responding to an incident involving an 18-year-old man who had escaped from a local hospital. The teenager has since been apprehended and charged with first-degree murder.

While the private funeral service held at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre was closed to the general public, hundreds lined the streets and highway overpasses to witness the solemn funeral cortege. The procession traveled west along Highway 407 from Thornhill to Mississauga, met by continuous salutes from emergency service personnel. For those unable to attend the route, the OPP provided a live stream of the service via their official YouTube channel.

Constable Bali’s death marks a devastating month for Ontario law enforcement, which has seen two line-of-duty fatalities in rapid succession. Just days after the incident in Hearst, veteran Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto was shot and killed during a high-risk dawn raid in North York. That operation was directly connected to investigations into a string of recent shootings, including a March attack targeting the U.S. Consulate.
