Air Canada Refunds Grieving Mother After Months of Delay Following Daughter’s Tragic Death

TORONTO: Air Canada is facing intense public scrutiny after initially refusing to refund a grieving mother who had to cancel her travel plans following the sudden death of her young daughter. Becky Cable-Munroe, a resident of Nova Scotia, was only reimbursed after a months-long struggle involving legal hurdles and significant media intervention.

The ordeal began in October last year when Becky’s ten-year-old daughter, Lucy, tragically passed away in a boating accident. Before the tragedy, Becky had booked tickets to Toronto for November as a surprise gift for Lucy to attend a concert by her favorite singer, Sabrina Carpenter. Following the loss of her child, Becky cancelled the trip and sought a refund under the airline’s bereavement policy.

Despite her circumstances, Air Canada initially provided only a partial refund for the daughter’s ticket and flatly refused to refund Becky’s own fare. For months, she attempted to resolve the issue with the airline, only to find the company’s online portal marking her case as “resolved” without any actual payment. It was only after CBC’s “Go Public” took up the story that the airline reversed its decision.

Air Canada has since attributed the delay to technical errors and processing issues involving the booking agency, Expedia. In a statement, the airline expressed regret for the situation and has now issued a full refund. Reflecting on the struggle, Becky Cable-Munroe stated that her fight was never about the money, but about how a multi-billion dollar corporation treats customers during their most vulnerable moments.

Consumer protection experts have slammed the airline’s handling of the case, calling it “unbelievable” that a grieving mother had to fight for months for a standard bereavement refund. The incident has sparked a wider conversation regarding the accountability of major airlines and the transparency of their refund policies in the event of family tragedies.
