HAMILTON – An 80-year-old man has died, and his wife remains in critical condition following a devastating fire at a Hamilton apartment building early Thursday morning. Emergency crews were dispatched to the residential complex at 1266 Fennell Avenue East, located near Mountain Brow Boulevard, just before 5:00 a.m. on March 26, 2026.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames venting from a fourth-floor unit. During their search and rescue operations, they discovered the elderly couple inside the apartment. The man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while his 80-year-old wife was rescued and rushed to a local trauma center with life-threatening injuries.
The blaze was contained to the single unit, though the heavy smoke necessitated a large-scale emergency response. Fennell Avenue East was temporarily closed from Shirley Street to Princeton Drive to facilitate the investigation and emergency operations, but the roadway has since been reopened to traffic.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified and is currently investigating the origin and cause of the fire. As of now, officials have not confirmed how the blaze started, and the identities of the victims have not been publicly released pending further investigation.
