Carney Stresses Canada ‘Not for Sale’ in Constructive White House Meeting with Trump

Washington : Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House for their first face-to-face discussions, focusing on trade, tariffs, and Canada-U.S. relations. Carney firmly told Trump that Canada is “never for sale,” pushing back against Trump’s repeated suggestions that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. The talks were described as “wide-ranging” and “constructive,” covering trade disputes, military cooperation, and security partnerships. No immediate resolution was reached on lifting U.S. tariffs, with Carney noting the complexity of the issue and the need for further discussions. Trump congratulated Carney on his recent election victory and expressed optimism about future relations, while both leaders agreed to meet again at the G7 summit next month. Carney later spoke at the Canadian Embassy, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to partnership but not at the expense of sovereignty.
