Relief for Passengers; BC Ferries Lifts Back in Service After Months of Repairs

PRINCE RUPERT – BC Ferries has announced that the elevators on the vessels serving the Haida Gwaii region are finally operational following months of technical issues and maintenance work. Both lifts on the Northern Expedition are now fully functional, providing a much-needed sigh of relief for travelers who rely on this essential maritime link between the islands and the mainland.

Despite the restoration of service, many passengers—particularly the elderly and those with physical disabilities—remain skeptical due to a long history of mechanical failures on these routes. For residents of Haida Gwaii, the ferry service is not just a convenience but a vital necessity for reaching critical medical appointments. In the past, recurring lift malfunctions have led to residents missing life-saving treatments, creating a climate of uncertainty and frustration among the local community.

To further improve accessibility, BC Ferries officials confirmed that the Northern Adventure, which is currently out for maintenance, will be fitted with a brand-new wheelchair lift next month. In the meantime, the company has introduced specialized equipment to assist mobility-challenged passengers during any unexpected outages. However, advocacy groups continue to point out that the aging infrastructure of the fleet is still not fully optimized for people with disabilities, calling for more permanent and modern solutions.

In response to these concerns, BC Ferries has pledged to prioritize maintenance and long-term stability for its accessibility features. Management acknowledged that providing a safe and dignified travel experience is a top priority, promising that future upgrades will focus on ensuring that vulnerable passengers never have to fear being stranded or missing essential services due to mechanical neglect.
