Winter Deepens in Waterloo: Freezing Rain and Snow Expected

KITCHENER — Residents in the Waterloo Region are bracing for a return to harsh winter conditions as Environment Canada warns of potential freezing rain beginning Saturday afternoon and lasting through the night. The weather agency noted that the system may initially start as a mix of snow or light rain before transitioning into freezing rain as temperatures fluctuate. This transition poses a significant risk for the accumulation of ice on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots, making surfaces extremely slippery and hazardous for both drivers and pedestrians.

In addition to the icy conditions, the region is expected to see a steady snowfall heading into Sunday. Meteorologists forecast total snow accumulations between 2 to 4 centimeters by Sunday morning. Authorities are advising the public to exercise caution, particularly in areas where ice build-up may be difficult to detect. Travelers are encouraged to check local weather updates and road conditions before heading out, as the combination of freezing rain and snow is likely to impact visibility and travel safety throughout the weekend.
