Orange Alert in Ottawa: Severe Freezing Rain Warning; Power Outages and Travel Disruptions Likely

Toronto: Environment Canada has issued an Orange Alert for Ottawa, warning of a severe freezing rain event expected to hit the region. The weather system is forecasted to begin late Sunday evening and continue through Monday morning.

Forecasters predict a heavy ice buildup of 15 to 20 mm on roads, sidewalks, and trees. Police have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid all non-essential travel. Roads and walkways are expected to become extremely slippery and hazardous for driving. Hydro Ottawa has warned that ice accumulation on tree branches and power lines could lead to widespread and prolonged power outages.

Authorities have advised residents to take the following precautions immediately. Ensure you have enough food, water, and essential medicines to last for at least 72 hours. Keep flashlights handy and ensure all mobile phones and laptops are fully charged before the storm hits.

While the freezing rain is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon as temperatures rise above 0°C, the warning remains in effect for Ottawa, Kanata, Orleans, and surrounding areas. Given the ongoing Christmas and New Year holiday season, officials have reminded travelers to check weather updates and plan their journeys carefully to avoid being stranded.
