Seniors Struggle to Recover from Surgery: Study Reveals High Rates of Post-Op Disability

OTTAWA: A new study has found that numerous older Canadian citizens are struggling to recover following surgery. The research revealed that one in six Canadians aged 65 and older either develops new disabilities or dies following a major surgical procedure.

The study was conducted by a team of doctors from across the country, focusing on more than two thousand Canadian seniors aged 65 and over.

The findings indicate that new post-operative disabilities led to significant mental health challenges for the elderly patients. Seniors were found to be six times more likely to experience severe depression, and more than twice as likely to regret their decision to undergo the surgery.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the lengthy recovery period, noting that the average older Canadian takes between three to six months to recover and return to their pre-surgery level of function.
