JOHANNESBURG: Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the G20 Summit. South African authorities confirmed that a joint declaration will be issued despite the absence of the US. Carney will hold bilateral meetings today with leaders from countries including France, Germany, the UK, and the European Union. Analysts, however, had expressed concern that the summit might fail to reach a consensus.
Carney is playing a key role in discussions focused on comprehensive economic growth, climate change, food systems, and clean energy, particularly concerning the reform of development financing. South African government spokesperson Vincent Magwenya announced that, even without US representatives, countries have agreed to adopt a joint statement that includes issues such as climate change and women’s rights.
Furthermore, Carney will participate in a discussion program involving the European Union and Vietnam, which leads the Pacific Rim countries’ trade bloc. Vietnam had led the trade alliance of Pacific Rim nations, including Canada. Carney’s participation is crucial in strengthening relations between these countries, which adhere to rules-based trade principles.
