TORONTO: The City of Toronto is preparing to open more than 1,200 shelter spaces to assist people experiencing homelessness this winter. This initiative is part of the city’s comprehensive Winter Services Plan. Authorities have confirmed that the shelters will be operational from November 15 until April 15.
The plan encompasses a total of 1,279 spaces, including 370 permanent, supportive, and subsidized housing units, 244 Warmth Centre spaces, 490 new shelter spaces, and 175 surge capacity spaces.
In addition to expanding physical capacity, the City stated it will deploy more outreach teams during periods of extreme cold. Regular outreach programs will also continue throughout the winter to provide warm clothing, sleeping bags, and other essential supplies to those living on the streets.
The City of Toronto also announced that selected new shelter spaces will open this weekend, as temperatures are expected to drop to -5 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
